Tavan Tolgoi UTP
  • “Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi” JSC, within the framework of the medium-term “A6-20” business plan, plans to put into operation a plant with a coal enrichment capacity of 30 million tons per year. At the first stage of the coal enrichment plant, 10 million tons of coking coal will be washed to produce 5.4 million tons of enriched coal and 3 million tons of intermediate products (midling). 2.7 million tons of enriched coal will be used for coke production, 1.5 million tons of intermediate midling will be used for power generation at Tavan Tolgoi TPP, and 2.7 million tons of enriched coal and 1.5 million tons of intermediate products in excess of domestic consumption will be used to support private sector production, form a unified industrial chain, and diversify products. The commissioning of the coal enrichment plant will enable the extraction and enrichment of layers 0, 5, 8, and 9 of the Tavan Tolgoi deposit, which are relatively low in quality and demand, to add value and extend the life of the mine.
  • The coke-energy plant will consist of infrastructure for receiving, preparing, cooling, drying, coking, and generating waste heat energy. It will process 2.7 million tons of enriched coal and produce 2 million tons of hard coke and 107 MW of electricity. The energy generated from the thermal decomposition of the coke production process will fully support production operations.
  • 0.5 million tons of hard coke from the coke-energy plant will be supplied to the steel plant based on the Darkhan Metallurgical Plant, creating a foundation for the development of heavy industry. 1.5 million tons of coke in excess of domestic consumption will be exported within the framework of the goal of diversifying the products of the company.
  • The association will also cooperate in the commissioning of the Tavan Tolgoi Thermal Power Plant, which is included in the Resolution of the State Great Khural on the Approval of the New Revival Policy. This will create a reliable source of energy for the mining industry in the Southern region and reduce the consumption of imported energy.
  • The Coal-Chemical Plant, which will be built within the framework of the policy of forming the industrial chain of the association, will produce methanol, fertilizer (ammonia) and liquid fuel using 1.5 million tons of intermediate products (Midling) from the Coal Enrichment Plant and 5 million tons of thermal coal.
  • The Coal-Chemical Plant will produce synthetic gas and methanol from coal using the deep processing technology similar to the “Coal-Chemical Complex Baganuur NTP”, and will create the opportunity to produce a variety of synthetic gas-based products. For example, fertilizers from deep processing can be used not only for agriculture but also for mine rehabilitation.
  • The commissioning of these coke-energy and coal-chemical plants will produce value-added and environmentally friendly final products and will be a real step towards realizing the green development goals set forth within the framework of the association.
  • The following functions will be implemented within the framework of the medium-term strategy for developing coke-energy and coal-chemical plants and producing value-added final products, thereby creating a foundation for the development of heavy industry. These include:
  • In collaboration with internationally accredited laboratories, research will be conducted to optimize technological options and procedures and increase product yield.
  • A study of industrial infrastructure, energy, water supply, and logistics will be conducted, and a detailed plan for the production and technology park will be developed.
  • A specialized workforce will be trained to ensure technological procedures, safe operation of toxic chemicals, and explosive materials in accordance with international standards.
