It is planned to establish 41 "Darkhan" industrial and technological parks in the field of metallurgical production, castings, and steel products in the Darkhan and Khongor soums of Darkhan-Uul aimag, to produce cast iron, steel billets, construction reinforcement, angle iron, metal products, metal structures, and spare parts for agricultural equipment.
In this location, "Darkhan Metallurgical Plant" LLC, a subsidiary of "Erdenes Mongol" LLC, is operating in the field of metallurgy based on the strategic Tumurtey iron ore deposit. The industrial and technological park will be established to fully utilize the Tumurtey deposit's low-grade iron ore reserves, extend the mine's lifespan, and increase the efficiency of the national and local economies, as well as the production of basic construction materials. The strategic iron ore deposit of Tumurtey has 220 million tons of iron ore reserves, well-developed infrastructure throughout the aimag, 104.6 thousand people live there, and the Institute of Technology and 3 polytechnic colleges under the SUTIS, which are necessary for training professional personnel, operate.
The steel plant, which is the base industry of the park, will be established with infrastructure and will initially produce 500 thousand tons of pig iron and 500 thousand tons of steel billets, and steel products such as construction reinforcement, angle iron, and steel wire from steel billets, thereby fully meeting the domestic construction reinforcement needs.
By Government Resolution No. 145 of 2023, a total of 77.7 hectares of land in Darkhan and Khongor soums of Darkhan-Uul aimag was allocated for special state needs for the purpose of establishing a steel production complex. Subsequent processing plants will be established based on active partnerships between the public-private sector and foreign and domestic investors.
